If it is your first time traveling with your cat, preparation is essential to ensure the experience is pleasant and free of unexpected surprises. Although cats are generally quiet travelers, airline rules are strict and require careful attention before departure.
General Rules and Health
Unlike dogs, cats do not have as many breed restrictions, but there are important nuances to consider:
- Cats with poor health or respiratory issues may face difficulties due to cabin pressure changes.
- TAROM does not accept short-nosed (brachycephalic) cat breeds on board.
Airlines: Who Accepts Cats?
Rules vary significantly from one operator to another:
- FlyOne and HiSky: Cats are accepted with prior approval. Note: your pet is not included in the free carry-on allowance and is treated as paid additional luggage.
- Ryanair: Does not allow pets on board.
- Deadline: Request approval and make your reservation at least 48 hours before the flight.
Cabin or Hold?
- In the Cabin: Recommended for small cats. The cat must remain in its crate throughout the flight, but being close to you will help keep them calm.
- In the Hold: For larger cats, in special climate-controlled compartments using solid IATA-approved crates.
Trip.ro Practical Tips
To ensure a stress-free flight, get your cat used to the crate a few days in advance. Do not provide large meals 3-4 hours before takeoff and avoid sedatives unless recommended by your vet.
